Think Wellbeing – Knit Club
Introducing ‘Think Wellbeing’, our new monthly content series which digs deep on exciting innovations and challenges in the world of wellbeing. Kickstarting the programme is our Publicist Bola Akande, who has created a lunchtime knitting club. Here we interview Bola about her knitting experience and what wellbeing means to her.
Have you always been interested in knitting?
I learned to knit when I was 7 but stopped doing it when I got to my teens as I became distracted by other things. A few years ago in 2014 Emily Darling and I were working on a campaign ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ where the client asked us to contact knitting associations. We got in contact with Wool and the Gang which inspired me to start knitting again.
What is your reason for knitting?
I find it extremely therapeutic and relaxing, it is nice to create something yourself. What is it you have made? In the past, I have created a scarf, and I’m currently working on a pillow and another scarf. I like to post pictures on my Instagram for all of my friends and family to see.
Why did you choose to create a knitting group?
I was speaking to my friend who works at Cancer Research UK and he said that a group of his colleagues participated in a knitting group in their lunchtimes. When the email went out about the Think Jam Wellbeing programme, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to get started and inspire my colleagues. I’m starting 2 different groups. Both groups teaching you how to initially knit but with a different final outcome.
What is the aim of your knitting group?
So I’m starting 2 different groups. Both groups teaching you how to initially knit but with a different final outcome.
Group 1: Make something for yourself or someone else, like a scarf.
Group 2: Create a small square which is going to be used to be part of a blanket, which will be donated to Knitaid. Knitaid is a great Knitting charity, where knitters help others in need, starting with refugees in Europe and around the world.
It’s nice to be with your work colleagues and create something which isn’t work-related.
Bola, what does ‘wellbeing’ mean to you?
Feeling good..within your mind body and soul!
